Our Story

St. Michael’s opened its doors in July of 2011 in order to fill a need here in Cebu; to offer a child-friendly education based on Waldorf teaching techniques and philosophy. The owner and founder, Grace Cabaero Ferreros,  has a M.A. in Education and a Diploma in Special Education. She was first certified as a Waldorf teacher back in 2001 by the International Waldorf Kindergarten Association of Stuttgart, Germany and the Rudolf Steiner Education in the Philippines (RStEP) and has both taught and been involved with the Waldorf method for over 14 years. Grace and St. Michael’s work closely with other Waldorf experts both internationally and in the Philippines.  Grace herself currently trains and consults for other teachers in the Visayas and Mindanao in the Waldorf method, and this is reflected in the incredible staff of teachers and administrators associated with the school.

St Michael’s currently offers classes for ages 1.5 to 6 years old, and will continue to add grades as the student population moves up in age.

A basic tenet of our program is that PLAY is the WORK of a young child. Constructive play is a deeply serious business for children; it is how the child learns to make sense of the world, and we strongly believe that kids will learn best when the learning process is enjoyable. In our program, we ensure that the child learns through an integration of activities and approaches, both indoor and outdoor.  Particularly in the early grades, learning need not be conducted solely when the child is seated in a chair at a desk.

Another guiding principle in our program is the vital importance of encouraging and assisting in the development of a child’s imagination and creativity. Albert Einstein once said,

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

Creativity, imagination, curiosity, a sense of self-worth, and a respect for others and the greater community: all are fundamental aspects to an education at St. Michael’s.  We believe that by establishing this basic foundation in a child’s life, he or she will WANT to learn, the quest will be natural and voluntary. Learning will become a lifetime joy.
